Bio: Thomas S. Dienwiebel

Thomas graduated in Electrical Engineering at the University of Dortmund in 2002 after having worked as a photonics engineer at Tsunami Optics, Inc., Mountain View, California. He started his training in the field of intellectual property law at a patent law firm in Witten, Germany in 2003. After having finished his training, Thomas became admitted as a patent attorney in Germany in 2007. Later, he worked as a partner in a patent law firm in Dortmund, Germany.

Thomas focuses his practice on patent prosecution and official third party review procedures, including the USPTO PGE and IPR procedures, as well German and European opposition procedures. He has significant experience in prosecuting patents in the fields of electrical engineering, software, and physics with a focus on electronics, telecommunications, optics, and medical devices. His experience also comprises trademark, licensing, and domain arbitration matters, as well as European border control procedures.

Thomas represents clients before the USPTO in patent matters and before the respective offices in Europe, and has substantial experience in complex opposition and invalidity procedures before the European Patent Office, the German Federal Patent Court, and the German Supreme Court. He also has vast experience in German patent infringement procedures and provides advice for clients regarding international filing strategies, in particular for patents.

Thomas is admitted to practice before the European Patent Office (EPO), the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Community Trademarks and Designs; OHIM), the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as registered Patent Agent. Thomas is not admitted to the California State Bar and does not practice California State Law.

He holds a law degree (Law for Patent Attorneys) from FernUniversität Hagen, Germany, and a degree in electrical engineering (Dipl.-Ing., comparable to a U.S. Master’s Degree) from Technical University of Dortmund, Germany. Thomas is fluent in English and German.
